Nature Spirit Being Series:
The legendary good Italian witch who delivers goodies on the eve of Epiphany. She holds her pet duck and magic broomstick. Our family had an Italian tradition to put our shoes out in the kitchen on the night of January 5th, the eve of Epiphany, January 6. We referred to that day as Little Christmas.
The good witch, La Befana would fill them with small goodies, candies and sometimes a silver dollar. There are many versions of the legend of the Befana. Here are a few links which give better descriptions than i can! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Befana
"The Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated January 6 with a national holiday in Italy, and the tradition of La Befana are a big part of Italian Christmas celebrations. Epiphany commemorates the 12th day of Christmas when the three Wise Men arrived at the manger bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. The traditional Christmas holiday season in Italy lasts through Epiphany" from http://goitaly.about.com/od/festivalsandevents/a/epiphany.htm
La Befana doll wears a robe and hood of gorgeous reds, oranges, golds and brown recycled material adorned by copper glass beads. In her folded arms she holds her pet duck in a nest of greenery. (I promise you, she has no intention of eating that duck!)
Her face was created by sculpting paper clay and then painting it. Her hair is recycled yarn. On her belt hangs a small bottle filled with moonstone chips, a semiprecious stone used in magic along with feathers. Her belt is made of glass copper beads, amber hued sea shell discs, and semiprecious fluorite stones. She also wears her magic broomstick, handcrafted with recycled hammered silver, copper mesh wire. Her broomstick has iridescent midnight blue and purple beads, moonstones, and a hematite star.
Hematite is used to tonify the blood, cleanse the liver and for clarity. Fluorite is used for lung ailments, grief, and emotional healing. Moonstone enhances intuition and inspiration, is used for protection on sea and land and holds the mysteries of past lives and the moon.
Fluorite is used in healing, especially lung problems, grief and helps to calm.
She measures about 10 inches long. A lovely Christmas, Holiday, Winter Solstice or Beltane gift.
A tribute poem to the Befana by Giovanni Pascoli:
Viene, viene la Befana
Vien dai monti a notte fonda
Come è stanca! la circonda
Neve e gelo e tramontana!
Viene, viene la Befana
The English translation is:
Here comes, here comes the Befana
She comes from the mountains in the deep of the night
Look how tired she is! All wrapped up
In snow and frost and the north wind!
Here comes, here comes the Befana!
